Don't let genuine gifts be overlooked

Liam spent months carving a cherry wood necklace for Clara, with forget-me-nots and their initials. But nerves made him tuck it into a crumpled bakery bag.

At their café, Clara’s smile dimmed beside friends’ ribbon-wrapped gifts. “Did you forget?” she asked.

“Open it,” Liam said, flushed.

Clara pulled out the necklace, its wood looking dull. “It’s nice,” she said flatly.

“You don’t like it,” he sighed.

“I thought you’d try harder with—”

“Try?” He leaned forward. “That’s my grandma’s wood! I carved your favorite flowers. I was just too scared to find a box—”

Clara held it to the light, seeing the shimmer and initials. “I’m sorry. I judged too fast.”

“Wrapping’s a gift’s first hello,” Liam said.

Clara nodded, putting it on. “This hello needed a second look.”
