From a Canton Fair Encounter to a Lasting Partnership — A Collaboration Story of Custom Premium Gift Boxes for Van Cleef & Arpels

At this year’s Canton Fair Phase II gift packaging exhibition area, a velvet-textured premium paper gift box on our booth captivated an international buyer, who lingered at our display for quite some time. He turned out to be the procurement manager for the packaging division of Van Cleef & Arpels. Founded in 1906, this prestigious French jewelry maison is renowned worldwide for its nature-inspired design philosophy and iconic green packaging, and was seeking a packaging partner who truly understood the spirit of the brand.

“Every piece of Van Cleef & Arpels jewelry carries poetry and emotion — the gift box that holds it should do no less.” These words set the stage for our collaboration.

Following the exhibition, the Van Cleef & Arpels design team presented their new seasonal jewelry concept to us via video conference — drawing inspiration from natural florals and starlit skies, infused with the maison’s signature poetic aesthetic. What they needed was not a standard off-the-shelf box, but a bespoke premium gift box that would resonate aesthetically with the jewelry itself. We presented four core advantages to the client, and it was precisely these four dimensions of capability that won over this century-old maison with its uncompromising pursuit of quality.

Tailored to the product, precision-matched. We designed dedicated interior lining structures and box formats for different Van Cleef & Arpels collections — pendants, bracelets, and long necklaces — ensuring each piece of jewelry found its most fitting resting place within the gift box, so that lifting the lid felt like unveiling a meticulously choreographed poetic stage.

A comprehensive packaging design solution. Our design team conducted in-depth research into the brand’s color palette and classic motifs, proposing to integrate the maison’s signature natural elements into the box surface through embossed relief techniques — transforming the gift box itself into an integral part of the brand narrative, rather than a mere container.

Specialty craftsmanship, giving the box its soul. To achieve the understated luxury the brand sought, we recommended a combination of soft-touch lamination with matte gold foil stamping, complemented by spot UV coating and magnetic flip-lid design, allowing every detail to reflect the maison’s distinctive radiance.

Eco-friendly renewable materials, aligned with a sustainable vision. Van Cleef & Arpels is committed to environmentally responsible packaging practices. We used FSC-certified renewable paper and soy-based eco-friendly inks, making each gift box a gentle promise to the planet. This strong alignment with the brand’s sustainability direction became a key driving force in securing the partnership.

Once the proposal was approved, we took the most sincere step yet — complimentary prototyping. 

Within two weeks, we completed three sample boxes and shipped them to Paris. The client spoke highly of the exquisite detail in the embossed surfaces and the refined tactile quality of the soft-touch lamination, while also suggesting adjustments to the interior lining color and the magnetic closure tension. We responded swiftly, delivering the optimized samples within a week.

After three rounds of sample iteration, Van Cleef & Arpels officially placed its first order. 

From a chance encounter at the Canton Fair to a signed agreement, the entire process spanned just over two months. This was more than an order — it was a testament to a shared belief in the aesthetics of quality.
